Satellite Applications assisting in Healthcare

Nicola visited the Satellite Applications Catapult based at Harwell to discuss opportunities for growth in the Space sector as well as sustainable healthcare transformation.

The Satellite Applications Catapult is an independent innovation and technology company, created to foster growth across the economy through the exploitation of space. Nicola was fascinated to hear how the research underway at Harwell is aiming to capitalise on the UK’s thriving Space industry; the UK commands a 7% share of the global space market and the Catapult is part of a network of centres aiming to accelerate the take-up of emerging technologies and drive economic growth.

The Catapult is also driving forward innovation in healthcare, arguing that the NHS needs radical thinking and that digital healthcare technologies empowered by satellites can make a major contribution. They can play a key role in planning and managing better new living environments which underpin wellbeing and healthier lifestyles.

At the showcase event, Nicola spoke with CEO Stuart Martin and Adrian Smith who leads on Healthcare Solutions to discuss these important innovation technologies further.

Nicola says: The work underway at Harwell is fascinating and it was great to meet exciting Space tech start-ups and discuss possibilities for NHS innovation. Satellite enabled solutions are a worthwhile opportunity to enhance public services and Harwell is enabling more and more businesses throughout the economy to harness satellite data.
