Nicola invited Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan MP, to visit the constituency for a Q&A with the Sixth Form of Oxford Girls’ High followed by a meeting with Directors of Kingfisher School to discuss their achievements and raise concerns about funding for special schools that have a high proportion of pupils with complex needs.
Finally, Nicky toured Abingdon & Witney College where she congratulated staff and students on a week of outstanding achievements: not only were they awarded Beacon Awards for transformational leadership but the college has topped the league tables for the success of its students on apprenticeship schemes.
According to the latest statistics released by the Skills Funding Agency, Abingdon & Witney College’s success rate for 16 to 18-year-olds on apprenticeships is the highest in England out of 218 colleges.
Ninety per cent of the 50 students due to finish their apprenticeships in 2013/14 completed all the study and work elements of their courses by the end of course deadlines. The national average is 55 per cent.
Since 2010, the Conservative-led Government have delivered 2.2 million apprenticeships nationally and the Conservatives have pledged to deliver a further 3 million in the next Parliament. Here in Oxford West & Abingdon, Nicola has championed apprenticeships, backing local training providers like Abingdon & Witney College and voting for measures to make it easier for more businesses to employ apprentices.
It has made a difference, since 2010, apprenticeships have increased by 63% and more and more opportunities are becoming available for young people.
Nicola says I congratulate Abingdon and Witney College for this wonderful achievement in delivering for our local young people. We will not allow young people to be forgotten as they were under the last Government. Instead, we are creating the jobs and the training opportunities they need to earn a regular pay packet and get on in life. With so much innovation in and around Abingdon I am delighted that the College is charging forward with this Government’s apprenticeship revolution.
