RACE at Culham: Making Driverless Cars a Reality

Nicola visited a pioneering robotics testing facility at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy on Friday.

She was shown around Culham’s new RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) facility, a UK centre of excellence, by RACE CEO Rob Buckingham and UK Atomic Energy Authority CEO Steve Cowley. The site is being used to develop Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) – like driverless cars.

Nicola then had the opportunity to discuss the project with Rob, Steve and Professor Paul Newman of the Oxford University Robotics Research Group. This included proposals for Culham City, a CAV testing site with a 10km urban-style road network, complete with roads, pavements and furniture.

Nicola says The technology being developed here is is truly ground breaking. Sites like this are essential to  ensuring that the UK retains is status as a world leader in science, leading the way to develop infrastructure fit for the 21st century.

I look forward to seeing the RACE project go from strength to strength in the coming months and years, and the team deserve full credit for their pioneering work.
